Me and dogs   Leave a comment

I made some more concrete this morning to go in the trench for the wall foundation. When I finished I played around with my camera and this is one of the results, me with Wilf and Minnie. Alf was  in the cool and dark space under the veranda floor.

Critters   Leave a comment

Well two new ‘critters’ were spotted and photographed this week. The first is a cricket, but not your normal titchy little thing, this is about two inches long head to tail and has a really bad attitude. If you mess about with it it marches towards you and bites you! It draws blood too. I’m pretty sure these are the things that create the loudest noises in the bushes at night too.

The other thing is a Hoopoe which I managed to photograph this morning while having my breakfast. It visits here every summer but I’ve never been able to get a photo of it before. Cute little thing about the size of a magpie and the feathers sticking up from it’s head raise up like a fan sometimes. The name is supposed to come from the sound it makes but I haven’t heard it yet so I’ll have to wait and see.

Boat trip   Leave a comment

Yesterday some friends, Lesley and Julian, invited me for a day out on a Gulet from Kalkan. Just swanning around the coastline, anchoring up here and there for a bit of swimming and eating. Generally a nice chilling out day. Here’s a picture of a Turkish Gulet almost exactly the same as the one we were on.

And here’s a picture of the day trippers, Julian and Lesley are the couple nearest the camera.

We visited one little beach where the soil from the cliff at the back of the beach can be collected, mixed with sea water and the resulting glutinous gunge plastered on your body making a thick mud covering which you let dry then wash off on the swim back to the boat. It is supposed to do wonders for your skin….. hmm. One of the crew swam ashore with a bucket to make the mud in and rather than take it empty….

the ladies filled it with useful items like wine and wine glasses. Here they are on the beach with wine and mud. Looks like they were talking about shoes doesn’t it?

Julian and I stayed on board and had a nice chat but not before he had enjoyed a quick swim.

All in all it was a very nice day, made a delightful change from making concrete and I send many thanks to Julian and Lesley.

Vines   Leave a comment

I have been training a vine at the back of the house (no it doesn’t roll over and play dead yet), it will eventually grow over the open sections of the frame overhead and along the side then the car will be parked under the roofed part in the winter so we don’t get soaked trying to get in or out. It has grown this far this spring and is starting to cover overhead now so I think it will only be a couple of years before it has covered it all and is bearing lots of grapes. Of course I had to prune off the grapes this year so that it would put all it’s effort into growing. It looks like it will be a great way to give us shade in the summer yet be light in the winter when there are no leaves. There are bound to drawbacks, probably I’ll get fed up sweeping up the leaves when they fall, there might be something else too but I can’t see it being too bad.

I’m thinking that a similar set-up at the front of the house would work well too. The house faces west so in the afternoon it is pretty hot on the veranda. I made a better roof for it which is much better and I’m thinking that if we pave the little garden area and have a frame over it then we can have another nice sitting area shaded by the vine and have some plants in pots etc. Apart from the shade, plants seem to have a cooling effect that just being in shadow doesn’t achieve.  Ömer’s restaurant in Ağullu just down the road is a good example, it always feels cool in the garden there and he has lots of big vines all over the garden area. Just another job for me to do!
