So there I was standing on a chair in my neighbour’s kitchen yesterday morning about to fit a new light because the old one had been fried by lightning and my phone rang….

“You know the stone you ordered? Well it will be there shortly.”

So I had to get off the stool and go back home. I called Ramazan and luckily he wasn’t working so I asked him to come and help. I had ordered 10 tonnes but when it turned up there was 13.5 tonnes. It took about an hour to unload it during which time the dogs got out and came to see what all the uproar was about. Of course Alf was the first out and then he went straight into the house and ate Stanley the cat’s bowl of food, Wilf found a tortoise and was carrying that around for half an hour or so much to everyone’s amusement. Here is photo of the guys helping to unload, the lorry driver didn’t want his photograph taken.

I didn’t do any more work for the rest of the day.

Babies   Leave a comment

Just thought I would show you the latest addition to the family.

While I was tending to the fruit trees this morning this little chap came ambling along. He is about two inches long and all bright and shiny like a new button. He is the first baby I’ve seen this year and I expect there are lots more of them around the garden so I’ll have to be careful about where I walk from now on.

When we (the dogs and I) walked up the road this morning for our daily exercise I noticed that the goatherders camp was empty. They must have packed up and gone to the mountains yesterday. Perhaps it was because they’d gone that we came upon a family of wild boar browsing along the side of the road. Of course the dogs wanted to go and chase them and pulled hard on their leads. The boar all took off crashing through the undergrowth as soon as they realised we were there. The dogs had a good sniff round and then we carried on with the walk. They like going for the walk first thing in the morning and it is doing me a lot of good, I’ve lost 3 kilos in weight and my knees are back to normal too. A bit further down the road near the top of the village a squirrel burst out of the undergrowth and ran down the road in front of us. Another exciting event for the dogs!

In the garden there seem to be more tortoises than ever now! Quite a lot of much smaller ones have appeared, they look like they might be last year’s babies. The bigger female ones have been laying eggs in any bit of dry soil or sand that they can find and they even come up the car parking space and try to get into the porch area.

Some sparrows were investigating a little gap in the veranda roof a month or so ago and now I can hear the sound of the chicks crying for food when the adults come back so they must have hatched in the last couple of days. There isn’t any need to put food out for them as there are plenty of insects and seeds around at the moment but I’ve put a dish of water where they can see it.

I got a couple of little Oregano plants a couple of weeks ago from the market, and a friend gave me a couple of Basil plants so last Friday I planted them in a big pot. I’ve put them on the veranda where they are mostly in shade but get reflected sunlight and they are doing well by the look of it.

We had a thunderstorm yesterday and quite a bit of rain which made everything smell really nice and fresh. It did away with the need to water things but it put some more water into the pool balance tank which means I have to go and dry it out again and I was thinking I would be able to go and reseal it again soon! Oh well there’s no rush I suppose.

No stone to leave unturned   Leave a comment

Still no stone, it’s Thursday evening now so I doubt it will come tomorrow as Friday is Mosque day for most people. I’m not in any hurry anyway so it’s not a problem.

That’s it for this evening, thank you one and all.

Still busy   Leave a comment

Well I’ve been hit by organisational ability again today. Should’ve seen it coming really. One of my friends here was talking about getting some flat stone delivered for 95 lira per tonne. Well the lowest I had seen was 180 lira per tonne and that was last year so I jumped on the bandwagon and ordered 10 tonnes. Got a phone message last night that it would be delivered today so I immediately shot off to the bank to get some of the money out of the hole in the wall, then visited Ramazan to arrange for him to work today. The total was a bit more than my daily limit on the card so at 6.30 this morning I cut the dog’s walk short and zoomed down to Kas on the scooter to get the rest so that I would be ready. Ramazan turned up this morning and we spent the morning doing some gardening while we were waiting. This afternoon we did some more gardening and then I phoned my friend only to find out the lorry was busy and the stone might be here on Wednesday or Thursday. Or it might not!

While we were doing the gardening I got hold of a clump of weeds to pull them out and recoiled in pain from a sting on my finger. It was quite severe and I thought maybe it was a scorpion or even a snake bite but it passed off after about 10 minutes so I’m not really sure what it was. Bloody smarted for a while though.

So in a fit of pique I went down to Omer’s restaurant to get a couple of beers seeing as I need to restock the fridge at the moment and I saw the result of a traffic accident that happened this afternoon. A van and a car and they were really mangled. Nobody was injured apparently, Allah was certainly on the ball for that one then because it looked very bad.

Rooting around in the undergrowth like we were today we saw just how many tortoises were hiding there, we found about twenty two! Most of them were males, on the lookout for females I suspect.

The balance tank on Simon’s swimming pool was leaking so I tried to put some more sealant on it but doesn’t seem to have worked. I’ve drained it again and dried out the floor with a mop but water is coming back in to it from the surrounding soil. I’ve got to wait until that stops now and then the sealant will work properly I hope.

I just changed the ‘Current mood’ to Happy. Any stress that may have been present has just been cleared out by Stanley the cat sitting on my lap and purring at me. Mostly life is good, well good enough for me today anyway. More soon…
